UIC BUSINESS LOSES A LEADER
It is with a deep sense of loss that we announce the passing of Ms. Debra Hopkins, an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Accounting.
Ms. Hopkins has been teaching at UIC Business since Fall 2012 and had just started her third year of teaching here. She brought with her a wealth of experience in both teaching and industry. As an educator, she taught for 27 years at Northern Illinois University. She was active with the Illinois CPA Society, and was honored with the Society’s 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award for her commitment to the organization and to the profession, as well as her contributions and achievements as an accounting professional, educator and leader.
According to Somnath Das, Professor and Head of the Department of Accounting, “Debra was an amazing and wonderful person full of life and cheer. Her enthusiasm for the profession and her energy to prepare students for the profession was infectious to anyone that had the good fortune to know her or
even interact with her casually, be it students, staff or faculty.”
This fall, Ms. Hopkins was teaching International Accounting and Advanced Auditing in the department of accounting. The Department has reached out to the students enrolled in her classes and will be making accommodations and alternative arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Debra Hopkins Memorial Fund, sent to the Hopkins Family in care of Anderson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 605, 2011 S. Fourth St., DeKalb, IL 60115.
For those who are having trouble dealing with the loss of Ms. Hopkins and need someone to talk to, counselors at the UIC Counseling Center are available for walk-in appointments.
