UIC Business Alumni Spotlight: Abdul Hanan Shah, B.S. Accounting and IDS '25, National Diversified Staff Group at EY.

When Abdul Hanan Shah graduated in May 2025 with dual majors in accounting and information and decision sciences, it marked more than the completion of a degree. As a first-generation college graduate, it was a milestone that reflected years of persistence, curiosity, and growth.

What began as an interest in accounting during a high school class evolved into a passion for understanding how financial data can drive smarter business decisions. At UIC, Abdul strengthened that interest by pairing accounting fundamentals with coursework in data analytics and information systems — a combination that positioned him for a career at the intersection of finance and technology.

Today, Abdul is a member of the national Diversified Staff Group (DSG) group at Ernst & Young (EY), one of the Big Four accounting firms, serving clients worldwide across assurance, consulting, strategy, transactions, and tax services.

Gaining Experience Across Industries

The DSG provides early-career professionals with exposure to a range of industries and service areas. Rather than working within a single niche, Abdul collaborates with clients in sectors ranging from manufacturing to consumer products, gaining insight into how different organizations approach reporting, operations, and long-term strategy.

Through this model, DSG professionals develop a broad, multidisciplinary skill set while leveraging data visualization tools to analyze information and solve complex client problems. The structure allows Abdul to build both technical depth and a cross-industry perspective — an experience that mirrors the interdisciplinary training he received as a student.

Bridging Accounting and Analytics

In his role, Abdul applies core accounting principles alongside digital tools such as Excel, Microsoft Power BI, and Tableau. The ability to interpret data and translate it into meaningful analysis has become central to his day-to-day work.

Being comfortable with digital tools makes all the difference. The industry is changing quickly, and staying curious helps you grow with it.

That mindset of adaptability and continuous learning has shaped his transition from student to professional. By combining accounting expertise with information and decision sciences, he entered the workforce prepared to meet technical expectations and evolve with the profession.

Looking Ahead

Abdul’s journey reflects the expanding role of technology within accounting and professional services. As firms increasingly rely on analytics and digital platforms, integrating business fundamentals with technical fluency has become essential.

For alumni, his path is a reminder of how the college’s interdisciplinary approach continues to prepare graduates for a profession in motion — one where curiosity, adaptability, and a strong foundation can open doors across industries and around the world.
