Dr. Alvin Chin Joins Department of Information and Decision Sciences as Clinical Assistant Professor
Meet Dr. Alvin Chin
Dr. Alvin Chin will join the Department of Information and Decision Sciences (IDS) this fall as a Clinical Assistant Professor after serving with us for the past year as a Visiting Clinical Assistant Professor. His research focuses on creating a responsible AI framework, evaluating AI credentials, and improving social recommendations through social mobile people networking. Previously, he served as a Principal Data Scientist at RXO and a Research Scientist at the Discovery Partners Institute, following an extensive tenure at BMW as a Senior Machine Learning Researcher and Emerging Technology Researcher. Across multiple innovation and machine learning roles at BMW, he advanced causal ML, and AI applications for manufacturing and intelligent driving. Dr. Chin’s diverse industry background also includes research positions at Nokia and Microsoft in Beijing where he used applied research for personalization and recommendation of news and people at events. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto, along with a MASc in Software Engineering and a BASc in Computer Engineering from the University of Waterloo. An active community member and speaker, Dr. Chin has delivered over 50 talks, authored more than 30 publications, and holds 10 patents. He is an IEEE Senior Member, ACM Senior Member and holds leadership roles in AI 2030, IEEE Chicago and ACM Chicago.
