UIC students recently visited the DHL Americas Innovation Center in Chicago — one of only four such centers worldwide and the only location in the Americas. The experience, part of the college’s ongoing collaboration with DHL, the world’s largest logistics company, offered a unique window into the future of supply chain and logistics.

The cohort included undergraduate business students, along with graduate students from the MS in Supply Chain and Operations Management program and UIC’s Industrial Engineering program. Led by Matt Liotine, clinical professor and director of graduate studies in supply chain and operations management at UIC’s College of Business Administration, the visit connected classroom learning to real-world innovation in global logistics systems.

During the visit, students explored DHL’s forward-looking approach to logistics, with a focus on artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), robotics, and sustainability. Demonstrations showed how these technologies are transforming global supply chains — improving efficiency, resilience, and environmental performance.

One highlight was a demonstration of Spot, a robotic system developed by Boston Dynamics, illustrating how advanced robotics can enhance safety and support real-time data collection in complex environments.

Engaging directly with these technologies, students gained a deeper understanding of how data, automation, and analytics drive modern logistics operations. For many, the experience was transformational — bringing their studies to life, sparking interest in career pathways, and reinforcing the relevance of their academic work.

As industry leaders like DHL continue to innovate, partnerships with UIC Business play a critical role in preparing students to enter a rapidly evolving workforce with confidence.
