Global Learning in Action: UIC Business Students in Costa Rica
UIC Business students combined classroom learning, real-world marketing projects, and cultural immersion during a transformative study abroad experience in Costa Rica.
Highlighting our Study Abroad Spring Break
UIC Business is committed to preparing students to lead in an increasingly interconnected global economy. This spring, that commitment came to life through the inaugural Global Immersion in Marketing (GIM) program, a faculty-led study abroad experience that combined academic coursework, applied consulting work, and cultural immersion in Costa Rica.
Led by Professor Kim Moon and supported by the Study Abroad Office, the program marked an important milestone for the marketing department as its first faculty-led study abroad course and the first to integrate a semester-long curriculum with an immersive spring break experience.
By pairing international travel with the academic requirements of Marketing Management, students earned course credit while applying marketing concepts in real-world settings.
Experiential Learning in Action
Experiential Learning in Action
Through a partnership with Arcos Study Abroad in Costa Rica, students collaborated with three local organizations on real-world marketing challenges.
Working in small teams, students conducted extensive pre-departure research and environmental analyses before traveling abroad to meet directly with clients and present strategic recommendations.
Students also participated in an Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) case competition alongside students from a local university, further strengthening their critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, and team-based collaboration.
These experiences challenged students to apply technical marketing knowledge while developing adaptability, problem-solving skills, and cross-cultural communication — all essential skills for today’s global business environment.
Immersive Cultural and Academic Exchange
Immersive Cultural and Academic Exchange
Beyond the classroom and consulting projects, the program emphasized cultural immersion and personal growth. Students lived with host families and engaged directly with local communities, gaining a deeper understanding of Costa Rican culture and everyday life.
Navigating language and communication differences while delivering professional-quality work provided students with a valuable perspective and confidence. The experience reinforced the importance of cultural awareness, empathy, and collaboration in international business settings.
The program’s impact was reflected not only in the students’ academic work but also in the meaningful connections and personal growth they experienced throughout the trip.
Student Reflections
Two students, Katie S. and Natalia C., shared reflections about their experiences, illustrating the depth of learning and personal growth fostered by the program.
Student Reflections
Overall, this program reinforced how I approach marketing: starting with the audience and using data and insights to guide decisions. I am so incredibly grateful for this life-changing experience. I was blessed with an amazing team, and having the opportunity to do real, impactful work is such a rewarding experience.
Natalia C.
This experience, immersing myself in a new culture, exploring my career through an international lens, and building new connections. has made me eager to grow as a marketer, learn more about international marketing, and travel to gain new perspectives from around the world.
Looking Ahead
Looking Ahead
The enthusiasm generated by this inaugural cohort — reflected in student testimonials, social engagement, and growing interest in future offerings — signals strong momentum for the program moving forward.
As the college looks ahead, the continuation of the program through a Global Marketing course open to students in all majors represents an important step in expanding access to high-impact learning opportunities.
While scholarship availability remains competitive, increasing access to transformative global experiences will remain a priority.
Programs like GIM reflect the kind of forward-thinking, globally engaged education that strengthens our academic mission, deepens external partnerships, and prepares students to succeed as future business leaders in a rapidly changing world.
