Elevating the Graduate Student Experience at UIC Business

Through ongoing collaboration, the Graduate Student Advisory Board is helping shape more meaningful engagement — placing greater emphasis on networking and connection.

A diverse group of people gathered around a table, enjoying a meal together with various dishes and drinks.

On April 15, I hosted members of our Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB) for dinner at Jarabe. Conversations with GSAB continue to shape how we support graduate students at UIC Business. The evening offered an opportunity to reflect on their contributions and discuss how to further strengthen engagement.

Prioritizing Networking and Connection

Over the course of the year, GSAB has played an important role in shaping the graduate student experience. They elevated opportunities they felt would add value, including access to professional headshots in University Hall, which I was pleased to help bring to fruition.

They have also been active partners in several college events, including Graduate Business Bowling Night, the Homecoming Tailgate, the Challenge of the Deans’ Alumni Social, the Involvement Fair, a networking workshop, and the Spring Alumni Social.

A key area of focus has been increasing participation through GSAB feedback, which highlights a clear shift in student preferences: they are increasingly seeking networking and connection over traditional, presentation-style programming. This insight is already guiding us as we design new experiences that better meet the needs of our graduate community.

Recognizing Excellence and Looking Ahead

GSAB members have also contributed to recognizing excellence across the college, serving as reviewers for awards such as Student Leader of the Year and Student Organization Advisor of the Year.

Their involvement helps ensure these recognitions reflect the perspectives of our graduate student community. Award recipients were recognized at the UIC Business Excellence Awards on April 22.

I am grateful for the thoughtfulness and leadership GSAB members bring to these conversations. Their perspective continues to shape how we think about engagement, career alignment, and the overall graduate student experience at UIC Business.
