Michael McLaughlin, Clinical Associate Professor of Accounting at the UIC College of Business Administration, was among three faculty members recognized with the Teaching Excellence Award during the UIC Business Fall 2026 Faculty Meeting.

Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in financial accounting, intermediate accounting, valuation, and tax, McLaughlin is committed to helping students build the skills and confidence they need for both their careers and their lives. As a licensed CPA in Illinois and Missouri, he supports students in preparing for the CPA exam, landing internships and jobs, and laying the groundwork for long-term financial security.

For McLaughlin, teaching extends beyond accounting principles. He strives to inspire students to become kind and caring individuals, supportive friends, and leaders in their communities, and he stays in touch with many of them long after graduation — supporting them throughout their careers and lives.

Reflecting on the award, McLaughlin expressed gratitude for the professors, guidance counselors, and friends who supported him throughout his own educational journey. He views the recognition as an opportunity to pay that support forward.

My work isn’t done when they leave the classroom and graduate; I’m staying in close touch to see that they buy their first home, build financial security, and become leaders in their community.

Outside the classroom, McLaughlin enjoys reading, spending time with his wife, Brooke, and their cats, Kirby and Pancake, and exploring the outdoors through nature walks, bicycling, and his recently discovered hobby of climbing trees.
