UIC Business Professor J. Christopher Westland Awarded Prestigious Fulbright–García Robles Award for 2026-2027
UIC Business is proud to announce that J. Christopher Westland, professor in the UIC Department of Information and Decision Sciences (IDS), has been named a recipient of the prestigious Fulbright–García Robles Scholar Award in Science and Technology for the 2026-2027 academic year.
Widely considered one of the “crown jewels” of the global Fulbright Program, the García Robles award is a bilateral initiative between the United States and Mexico. It is administered by the U.S.–Mexico Commission for Educational Exchange (COMEXUS), established in 1990.
Named after Alfonso García Robles, the Mexican diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize winner, this award holds a unique status that reflects the deep diplomatic, economic, and academic ties between the two nations. It is highly competitive, requiring specialized expertise and proficiency in Spanish, and is often viewed as a “diplomatic fast-track” for leaders in cross-border business and international relations.
Innovation and Economic Complexity in the Yucatán
During his Fulbright year, Professor Westland will be a visiting scholar at Anahuac Mayab University in Mérida, Mexico. His research will focus on the Yucatán, currently Mexico’s fastest-growing regional economy.
Utilizing advanced trade and satellite data, he will collaborate with local faculty to map economic complexity networks to better understand the drivers of the region’s rapid industrial and commercial expansion.
In addition to his research, Professor Westland will play a pivotal role in the region’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, working directly with TecniA, Mexico’s premier technology incubator, to help promote and commercialize Mexican STEM innovations.
This collaboration aligns with the Fulbright–García Robles mission of fostering professional and binational business development under the framework of the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA).
A Global Distinction
While all Fulbright awards carry immense prestige, the García Robles Award is distinguished by its practical and professional impact. It is viewed by the U.S. State Department and the private sector as a high-level training ground for the future leaders of the North American corridor.
“We are thrilled to see Professor Westland receive this incredible honor,” said Sandy Wayne, dean of UIC Business. “His work in Mérida will not only contribute to our understanding of economic networks but will also strengthen the vital business and innovation links between Chicago and Mexico. This award underscores the global caliber of our IDS faculty.”
The UIC Business community congratulates Professor Westland on this remarkable achievement and looks forward to the insights his work will bring to our students and the broader field of international business.
