UIC Business Shines at AWS IMAGINE Summit
A UIC Business team of seven students showcased their innovation and technical expertise by placing first in the student challenge at the Amazon Web Services (AWS) IMAGINE Summit, held July 29–30 in Chicago.
Guided by Mustafa Mohammed, Lecturer in Information and Decision Sciences (IDS), the students participated in the AWS Innovation Sandbox, where they applied cloud technologies to solve real-world challenges.
Each student was recognized with a Certificate of Appreciation and AWS swag, highlighting their creativity, problem-solving skills, and commitment to developing in-demand technology expertise.
UIC’s Role in the AWS Tech Alliance
UIC is one of only 45 U.S. institutions that participate in the AWS Tech Alliance, a global coalition of government agencies, educational institutions, and cloud employers dedicated to addressing the technology skills gap. The alliance integrates industry expertise into academic programs to prepare learners for high-demand careers in software development, cloud analysis, data analysis, and cybersecurity.
Since joining the Alliance in 2023, UIC students in IDS 410: Business Database Technology have met the skill benchmarks for the data analyst track. Students have also excelled in other national events, placing first at a recent AWS-sponsored hackathon and second in a third challenge.
Hands-On Innovation in the Cloud
At the Summit, UIC students used the AWS Innovation Sandbox, a secure cloud environment, to deploy databases, develop data pipelines to migrate the data, and incorporate agentic AI to run SQL queries—mirroring the workflows of today’s tech employers.
Building a Pipeline of Tech Talent
Through programs like the AWS Tech Alliance and opportunities such as the IMAGINE Summit, UIC Business continues to prepare students for the evolving demands of the digital economy. By combining academic rigor with industry-driven experiences, students graduate career-ready and positioned to lead in the rapidly growing fields of cloud computing and data analytics.
