UIC Business Students Visit Chicago Board Options Exchange (Cboe)

UIC Business staff, faculty, and students pose together for a group photo at the Chicago Board Options Exchange (Cboe).

Emeritus Finance Professor Gib Bassett led a group of 30 UIC Business students to the Chicago Board Options Exchange (Cboe), joined by Andriy Bodnaruk, Finance Professor and Interim Head of the Department of Managerial Studies, and Bilal Erturk, Clinical Professor of Finance and Director of Graduate Studies. Students had the opportunity to observe floor operations and the roles of market makers and brokers. They saw first-hand the size and magnitude of risk trading on a daily basis, as well as the career opportunities available at Cboe.

Cboe, with its extensive reach across various asset classes and global markets, is a powerhouse in the financial realm. Housing 10 trading pits, including those for options like the S&P 500 Index (SPX) and Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), it stands as the largest options exchange in the U.S. While competitors also operate major options exchanges, Cboe’s combination of four unique platforms and exclusive index products maintains its position as the market leader. Our students’ visit was not only an exploration of the trading floor, but a dive into the heartbeat of modern finance, emphasizing UIC Business’s close relationship with business in Chicago.
